For a single year, hotels are actually cheaper (~$61k vs the van's ~$90k net). But you're keeping it β and the van costs ~$25β35k/yr less to operate (camping β free vs ~$29k of Airbnbs), so the one-time build + shipping pays back at about 2β2.5 years. The Truma Combi (in power + climate) also heats the water, so the water row carries no separate heater. How you ship is decided mostly by van height β and it's a real cost-and-risk lever. Three methods exist; the live choice is container vs RoRo, with flat-rack the fallback for a too-tall van.

Container β standard roof only. A 40 ft High-Cube door is ~2.58 m, so only a standard-roof Sprinter (~2.35 m) fits, with ~22 cm spare for low-profile solar (no roof A/C, rack or raised fan). You get a locked, weatherproof box that takes belongings and an installed lithium battery β ideal for protecting a $150k+ fitted build. Dearer than RoRo, but often worth it.
RoRo β any height, cheapest. Takes a high-roof van too (high deck, sometimes a surcharge) and it's the cheapest method β but the van ships empty, exposed to weather/handling/theft, and lithium is increasingly refused. Fine for a cheaper rig or a budget crossing; riskier for a valuable build.
Flat-rack β the tall-van tax. A high / super-high-roof van that can't container and that RoRo won't take (e.g. with a fixed lithium bank) ends up here: the most expensive option, exposed, with dangerous-goods paperwork.

RoRo is cheaper; a container protects. RoRo wins on raw price (~$4.5β7k vs ~$9β16k each way AUβEU), but for a valuable fitted camper the container's protection, belongings and lithium-acceptance usually justify the premium.
Build a standard roof (or a pop-top) and you keep every option: container it (protected) or RoRo it (cheap), and never pay the flat-rack tax β saving ~$8β18k over a round-the-world trip. The price is interior standing height; a pop-top gives you both (low to ship, standing when parked).
Don't forget the extras either way: AU biosecurity clean ~$200β500, marine insurance ~1.3β2.5% of value per voyage, and demurrage if customs holds the van.
NZ is the budget shipping lane: a one-week Tasman hop (vs 4β8 weeks to Europe), RHD like Australia (no left-hand-drive adjustment), and freedom-camping heaven for a self-contained van. A fitted camper can go RoRo β it doesn't have to containerise.

The catches (both manageable): empty the gas + strip all food/loose gear, and steam-clean the underbody (~A$200β500) before sailing β NZ's MPI biosecurity is the world's strictest (a clean pass inspects for ~A$150; a fail runs A$400β1,000+). Use temporary import (GST/duty-free up to 12 months β keep your AU plates; never permanent import); a Carnet de Passages (via the AAA) is the tidiest single document because it also covers the Australian re-entry. On arrival you just need a WOF roadworthy check (+ Road User Charges for a diesel). Touring both islands? The Cook Strait ferry is ~A$280β350 each way for a 6 m van.
Net: NZ is roughly half (or less) the all-in cost of Europe per round trip (~A$9β11k vs ~A$15β35k), one week not eight, and the lowest-friction way to take your own built van overseas β a smart first international chapter before the bigger Europe commitment.
The method reality: a finished luxury Sprinter (super-high roof + roof solar/AC) stands ~2.9β3.0 m β taller than a 40 ft High-Cube container's ~2.58 m door. So it ships RoRo (drive-on; cheapest; priced by lane-metre) or on a flat-rack / open-top (height-unlimited, pricier, weather-exposed) β not a standard container. Ask for RoRo + flat-rack quotes, and re-confirm the ~$17β23k estimate against real numbers.
