Scuba progression.

Open Water → cheap experience & advanced certs in SE Asia → the world's best dives, slotted into the van routes.

Where you are: Open Water certified, own dive computer, early dive count, no advanced or specialty certs yet. Perfect launch point — the plan is build confidence at home, accelerate cheap in SE Asia, then dive the planet on the trips.

Start here — first 4 moves, in order

Move 1 · now, anywhere
Do your Nitrox cert
Cheapest cert, biggest payoff — longer bottom time. Theory is often online-only.
½–1 day · do the theory from home
~$140–250
Move 2 · next 2 months
Buy your personal kit
Mask + snorkel, travel fins, 3mm wetsuit, DSMB + spool, torch, save-a-dive kit (computer ✅ already owned)
All carry-on-able · rent the bulky/expensive stuff for now
~$400–900 all-in
Move 3 · before Europe
Drysuit cert in cold AU water
Melbourne / Tasmania cold water = perfect practice. The gatekeeper for Silfra, Norway & cold-Med diving.
1–2 days / 2 dives
~$399
Move 4 · SE Asia trip
AOW → Rescue → specialties
Koh Tao or Gili — the cheapest cert factories on earth. Bank 30–50+ dives while you're at it.
~1–2 weeks
~$1,500–2,500 for the lot

Where I am now.

A solid, common starting point — certified and self-equipped on the safety basics. The gaps are all closeable cheaply in SE Asia.

Have

  • Open Water certification (PADI/SSI cross-recognised worldwide)
  • Own dive computer — the smartest first purchase, already done
  • Comfortable to ~18m on the OW ticket
  • A multi-year travel plan that passes near world-class diving on every route

Gaps to close

  • No Advanced Open Water — caps you at 18m and off most liveaboards
  • No Nitrox — the cheapest, highest-payoff cert
  • No Rescue/EFR — the cert that makes you genuinely safe
  • No drysuit skills — locks you out of the best cold dives (Silfra, Norway)
  • Low logged-dive count — needed before the advanced bucket-list sites
  • Minimal personal gear beyond the computer

Certifications — in order.

PADI and SSI are cross-recognised everywhere, so mix freely and just take whoever's cheapest/best at each spot. SE Asia (Koh Tao, Gili) is the cheapest place on earth to certify — do the bulk there.

Gear — buy vs rent.

As a travelling diver, every kg costs you. Own the personal-fit / hygiene / safety items; rent the bulky, expensive, service-hungry stuff until you're diving enough to justify hauling it. You already made the best first buy — the computer.

Australia — build experience at home.

Rack up dives and tick a few uniquely-Australian encounters before you fly off. Cold-water sites double as drysuit practice for Europe.
