Trips & routes.

Where this rig can actually go — a van-accessibility map, the country detail behind it, and four worked one-year routes costed leg-by-leg, van vs no-van, with experiences and climbing.

How to read the costs. The leg tables assume a touring pace — you move every few days, matching the van — so no-van accommodation is at nightly/short-stay rates. If instead you base yourself monthly in each country (slow travel), no-van costs drop a lot (see the "Cost by region" table on the comparison page). Van running costs are similar either way. All figures indicative AUD (2026), solo, mid-range — verify before travel.

The lay of the land.

Every country shaded by how van-friendly it is right now (2026). Hover for the reason; drag to pan, +/− to zoom.

Easy — drive in freely Doable — minor formalities Big caveats — carnet / guide / safety Impossible — closed / war / banned Not rated

Ratings are indicative — re-check before travel.

* No formal carnet, but a foreign-vehicle permit (often a guide/convoy) is required instead. Safety = Australian DFAT Smartraveller levels.

Six routes, leg by leg.

Each row is a country: weeks there, the 🚐 van cost (fuel + self-catered food + border to next), the ✈️ no-van cost (accommodation + eating out + flight to next), ✨ experiences (🚐 = van-only), and 🧗 climbing for a trad traveller.

Van wins on cost and experience — cheap diesel, free wild camping, and the trip's headline is van-only (Pamir self-drive, Song-Köl, Svaneti, Charyn). Cap the ambition at Central Asia; Mongolia needs the war over or a pricey China transit. The Caspian ferry is the one logistical gamble.
